Original Watercolor / Aqueous Paintings on Canvas by Tarjan for Sale.
Watercolors are water based (aqueous) paints that are usually painted onto a substrate such as paper or paper boards. Traditional watercolor techniques involve pigments that are applied to a white paper substrate which soak into the paper. They are like stained glass because they are transparent and are coloring and staining the white paper rather than covering it like oil paints. Traditional watercolors are called transparent watercolors. However, not all watercolor paintings are purely transparent. There are non-transparent watercolors, such as gouache, which are opaque and cover the paper rather that stain it. These are often referred to as ‘mixed aqueous’. They are still water re-mixable after they have dried which means that can be re-worked by simply wetting the paint. Many watercolor techniques incorporate aqueous methods that use transparent and non transparent watercolors together; hence, the name ‘mixed aqueous’ best describes them.

Sometimes acrylic paints (which are water based also) are combined with watercolors and used as light staining underbases for the watercolors. Since acrylics are not water re-mixable once they have dried, they allow for different watercolor techniques to be used. They can also be applied as wet watercolor like pigments, and can also be painted to cover the paints and/or paper beneath.
