Oil painting of elk by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Season Of Gray and Gold

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 26″h x 40″w, 2000.

Jackson Hole Wildlife Area in Wyoming is packed with herds of elk during the winter. I painted these fine-looking elk that I saw at the refuge and put them in a stormy scene at the north end of Yellowstone National Park. Several years later I decided I didn’t like the elk in the painting, so I painted over them. That painting has changed five times. The only record of the painting is my photos of it.
