Swans in the Gray of Winter
Medium: Gouache, Image Size: 7.5″h X12″w, 1996.
I experimented with this painting and did it as a purely gouache piece. Gouache is an opaque watercolor, and though it has an appearance similar to oil, it is a challenge to work with. For instance, all the colors dry darker when they dry, so you have to guess at what they will look like when they are wet. These two Trumpeter Swans turned out good, as did the snow and ice. I painted them resting gracefully in the frozen landscape. I saw them near Teton National Park.
