My watercolor painting, ‘Surf’s Edge Oystercatcher’ has been juried into the Coos Art Museum’s Maritime Art Exhibition 2026: Surge. This is the museum’s 32nd year showcasing this annual maritime exhibit. It is the only prestigious maritime exhibition on the west coast.

ARTIST”S STATEMENT

The subject for this watercolor painting is an Oystercatcher shorebird. I portrayed it in a surf’s edge setting that I saw at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, Washington where I often saw Oystercatchers probing among the inter tidal zone rocks for mussels, mollusks, and other invertebrates. Oystercatchers are my favorite shorebird. They’re fun to watch suddenly fly up just before the surf crashes where they are perched.
The setting I chose for this bird is a rocky stretch of beach dotted with diverse types of rocks of various colors, shapes, and compositions. They were deposited there by glaciers from Canada, the Cascades Mountains, the Puget Sound, and the Olympic Mountains. I thought the combination of the active surf’s edge, the diverse rocks, and the noble Oystercatcher made a good painting.

This painting was juried into the Maritime Art Exhibition 2026: Surge, Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay, Oregon; the National Watercolor Society Member Exhibition, 2024; and The 2023 Annual Washington State Juried Art Competition at the Collective Visions Gallery in Bremerton, Washington.
