Foothills and Horses

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 14.75”h x 18.75”w, 1996.

On Yreka Ager Rd. in Siskiyou County, California is a cluster of foothills that skirt the base of Paradise Craggy. In midday these hills seem bleak and flat; but, by late afternoon these unassuming hills dominate the landscape. Their rolling sensual curves become pronounced as the thick blue shadows they cast upon their flanks and gullies reveal their true shape and massive volume. The rich purple and blue tones of the shadows contrast harshly with the gray, golden hue of the summer bleached grasses. With such sensual hills as a setting the best animal to compliment it is the sensual, and shapely horse. Both hills and horses are a fitting compliment to each other – such a curvaceous feast for the eyes. These two horses made this foothill scene more interesting.
