ABOUT THE ARTWORK: This watercolor depicts a beautiful sunset scene at low tide at Lone Ranch Beach State Park on the southern Oregon coast near Brookings, Oregon. I chose this scene because of the peaceful qualities of the beach that are contrasted against the complex shapes of the eroded rocks and surrounding cliffs. The foreground rock reveals a crusty texture from the growth of barnacles and muscles. Because this was low tide this foreground rock is normally submerged by the ocean, so those barnacles and mussels aren’t visible until a really low tide. The mid-ground rocks are short and show complex wave shaped rocks. The simplicity and starkness of the sand in the mid-ground contrasts nicely with these sculpted rock shapes. In the mid-background there is a cluster of rock sea stacks with interesting eroded shapes. Lastly, the coastal cliffs are impressive and tower above the beach and its rocks. This scene looks south towards Brookings.
I chose this beach scene because it is interesting, complex, peaceful, and beautiful and it is typical of most of the southern Oregon coast. Samuel Boardman called this section of the Oregon coast, “Rembrandt’s Pallette”, and I fully agree with that description. Lone Ranch Beach State Park is part of the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, and it’s scenic beauty is awe inspiring and well worth visiting.
