Watercolor painting White-winged Doves by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Nesting Doves

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 4″h x 6″w, 1993.

When I was painting 49 Palms Oasis in Joshua Tree National Park – a watercolor that I painted plein aire – I would hear doves in the oasis where I was painting. I love their cooing call. I spent two weeks working on the painting, and each day I would hike to the oasis to paint for several hours. Though I never saw these White-winged Doves, I often heard them. I did eventually get some decent photos of this species of dove, and I did this painting to honor the ones I often heard at the oasis.

This painting is part of the miniature art collection of the Leigh Yawkey Woodsen Art Museum.
