Watercolor painting of a gold finches and a house finch by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Songbird Quartet

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 16”h x 21”w, 1990.

For many years I had a bird feeder that attracted lots of birds. Birds would gather on nearby branches which is where I got the inspiration to do this watercolor of these American Goldfinches and a House Finch. The painting was a pure transparent watercolor. I masked out the birds and leaves with Miskit masking fluid which acted as a water-resistant barrier. I then did a very wet in wet wash for the background. After the wash dried, I rubbed off the masking fluid and painted the birds and leaves with wet-on dry washes.
