Watercolor painting of a male Turkeys by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Turkey Bachelors

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 17.25″h x 23.25″w, 2015, Revised 2017.

One spring afternoon I rode my bike along the American River Trail in Sacramento, California and saw this handsome flock of the tom Turkeys who were in full strut looking for mates. Because there is so much human activity along the trail, the Turkeys are not afraid of people, so I was able to stroll along with these fellows and photograph them in their many poses and exquisite displays. I must have shot close to five hundred photos that day. I felt so fortunate to have been in their presence for so long. This painting was a humble attempt to honor their magnificent qualities. While doing this painting I was amazed at how complex their feather patterns are. It was a great learning experience.
