Gathering the Calves for the Branding

Watercolor painting of cowboy on horseback and calf by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Gathering the Calves for the Branding

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 12.5”h x 15.25”w, 2008.

This painting is from a location off Sevenmile Rd. near Fort Klamath, Oregon. The background is artistically interpreted from the real scene, hence it’s missing some mountains. The cowboy is Dave Toms from Siskiyou County. I photographed Dave at several brandings at my sister and brother-in-law’s ranch in Weed, California, and used these photos as resources to paint from since I couldn’t possibly remember every detail of horse, rider, and calf. This calf was being herded to a branding. This artwork represents one of the romantic aspects of the southern Oregon ranching community.

This painting exhibited in the exhibition ‘A Taste of Klamath from the Field to the Table’, Ross Ragland Theater and Cultural Center, Klamath Falls, Oregon, (Second Place Award). It is also part of the private collection of the Rocky Mountain Clothing Company.

Original is sold.
