The Weird Wolf

The Weird Wolf

Medium: Watercolor, Digital/Photoshop, Book Size: 11.5”h x 9″w, 2018.

In the 1990’s I created a children’s book story about a spotted wolf that is rejected by its pack, but later saves the pack from hunters because of its spots. Originally, I collaborated with a friend who was going to write the text to the story, and I would illustrate it. My friend, Shelly Zelazny, wrote the story, and I illustrated it. Neither of us realized, at the time, that publishers only want to receive the text part of the story, and not the illustrations. So, I attempted to get publishers to publish the story, but it never got published. Years later, I decided to revive the story and went to a children’s book editor/consultant to help me with the story. Her advice was to have me write the story with a new plot, but still retaining the spotted, rejected wolf theme. So, the story changed, I renewed some of the old illustrations and added new ones and published the book on Amazon as a digital book. This is the cover of the book.

Yes! Christmas has gone to the dogs, so… you might as well join the fun and howl away the howlidays too. This artwork depicts how I think dogs would like to celebrate Christmas-floating above town in a sleigh and howling out their favorite Christmas tunes.

I was commissioned by the Klamath Arts Council in Klamath Falls, Oregon to create a fun T-shirt design for their annual 3rd Thursday summer event. I included graphic icons of most of the festivities that the event hosted.

While out back country skiing on Mt. Shasta in northern California, I skied past this spot and was so impressed with how beautiful Mt. Shasta was in rosy light of the setting sun, so I painted this scene to capture that amazing moment. I painted the wolf in the setting to symbolize how grand and noble the Mountain is.

I tried a new graphic style for this artwork that was influenced by the traditional artworks of the Alaskan and Canadian indigenous artists. It is a totemic style with some shading.

I did this design as a sample to show one of my graphic styles that I do. I thought it was a cute image of a cow jumping over a hamburger. I was inspired to do this design because of my childhood memories of growing up in a family that owned a Foster’s Freeze fast food restaurant. Foster’s Freeze franchises are a lot like A & W fast food restaurants because they serve a broad variety of ice cream products. I have many good memories of my family’s store, and this design sort of summed it up in a fun way.
