Watercolor painting of Mourning Doves by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Dove Mates

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 11″h x 15″w, 2014.

Each spring these two mating doves would cavort, mate, hatch, and raise their brood somewhere between our commercial building and the Klamath County Museum. I love the subtle colors of these doves and their mournful calls, so I did this painting to honor them.

Dove Cluster

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 10.5″h x 15″w, 2003.

Mourning Doves aren’t the smartest birds out there. I’ve seen them nest on the ground in places that were unwise places to nest; yet they somehow rear their young and fill the air with their mournful calls. I put this small flock in a colorful, pebbled setting to mimic the colors in their plumage.

I painted this watercolor of this flock of Mourning Doves that I saw one morning as they strutted over a rocky spot in search of food.
