Pickleweed and Sandpipers

Watercolor painting of pickleweed and Sandpipers by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Pickleweed and Sandpipers

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 17″h x 20″w, 1989.

This was such an unusual setting because the pickleweed, when exposed at low tide, looks almost alien-especially when it is draped with algae. Though I wouldn’t normally paint such a bizarre scene, but I couldn’t resist doing this painting when I saw Sandpipers feeding among the mucky composition in this coastal slough. I saw this at Elkhorn Slough, California.

Curlew and Sandpiper

Watercolor painting of a curlew and sandpiper on beach by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Curlew and Sandpiper

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 7.5″h x 10.5″w, 2015.

This odd pair of shorebirds were hunting together along the surf at Morro Bay, California. It was late winter and there were hundreds of shorebirds migrating north along the coast. I did this painting to show the difference in size, shape, and feather patterns of these two beautiful birds.

Original is sold.

Sandpiper Pause

Watercolor painting of a Sandpiper by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Sandpiper Pause

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 4″h x 6″w, 2015.

This cute Western Sandpiper paused while it was hunting among the coastal surf. I saw this little fellow along the beach at Port Townsend, Washington.
