This cougar cleans it paws while it rests in the cool shade of a rock overhang. I couldn’t resist painting a cougar in this rock landscape scene in Joshua Tree National Park. Joshua Tree has such interesting, sculpted rock formations that are perfect spots for wildlife to hang out and take refuge in. This was a great setting for a contented cougar cleaning itself.

I photographed this juvenile cougar cat napping with its head resting on a small log. I painted it just as I had seen it. To do this painting in watercolor, I used masking fluid to block out the cat and log while I did a wet in wet wash for the background. After the background dried, I removed the masking fluid and painted the cat and log using very fine brushes and many layers of subtle washes.

This scene was on Little Bogus Creek in North Shasta Valley in Siskiyou County, CA. The powerful cougar is complimented by the enduring power of the rocks. Also, the cougar is well camouflaged by the rocks and the linear shape of its pose fits well with the rock shelf. This is published as a limited edition print.
