Trillium Cluster

Watercolor painting of Trillium flowers by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Trillium Flower Cluster

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 8″h x 12″w, 2000.

I saw this cluster of Trillium Lilies while I hiked along the Pacific Crest Trail in Southern Oregon. It had a wonderful composition, and I created it so that all the stages of the flower color transitions of white, pink, and red were all in one cluster. I did this in technical botanical illustration style.

Shasta Lily Study

Watercolor painting of a Shasta Lily by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Shasta Lily Study & Shasta Lily Reproduction

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 12″h x 8″w, 2000, Revised 2021.

The Shasta Lily (Cascade Lily) is a gorgeous flower found in shrubby and rocky areas in the Pacific Northwest. I found this one beside the Pacific Crest Trail in Siskiyou County, California. I thought it would make a nice painting. The first version of this painting had no background. The second version had a loose colorful wash. The final version has a very dark background that better accents the beautiful colors of this lily.

Forest Dogwood

Watercolor painting of a Forest Dogwood bloom by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Forest Dogwood

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 7.5″h x7.5″w, 2015.

In this quick watercolor study, I wanted to show the lantern like qualities of Dogwood flowers whose papery, white petals almost glow against the dark hues and values of the dense forest canopies they grow in. I kept the surrounding wash of this watercolor loose but indicated other plants in the background. One of my North American Wildflower Paintings series.
