Brother Elk

Garment illustration by Janet Tarjan Erl

Brother Elk

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 14″h x 22″w, T-shirt Image Size: 9.5″h x 15″w, 1997.

I created this illustration as part of a line of outdoor sportsman artworks. This art was designed with the hunting enthusiast in mind. Whether you’re out hunting, or just exploring, seeing two big, bull elk can be quite a thrill. To see these magnificent animals in the wild you must be watchful because even though they are big, they move about very quietly.

Painted in watercolor. Scanned into the computer and floated. Digital painting and enhancements, graphics, colors, effects, and text were done in Photoshop.

Season of Gray and Gold

Oil painting of elk by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Season Of Gray and Gold

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 26″h x 40″w, 2000.

Jackson Hole Wildlife Area in Wyoming is packed with herds of elk during the winter. I painted these fine-looking elk that I saw at the refuge and put them in a stormy scene at the north end of Yellowstone National Park. Several years later I decided I didn’t like the elk in the painting, so I painted over them. That painting has changed five times. The only record of the painting is my photos of it.

Walk in Fields of Gold

Watercolor landscape painting with elk by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Walk In Fields of Gold

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 20″h x 28 1/2″w, 1994.

A herd of cow elk walk through a meadow of golden grasses in Yellowstone National Park. I saw this scene at the north entrance to the park. It was incredibly cold that winter day, so I depicted that cold storminess in the background. There were abundant elk herds in the park, so I married this beautiful scene with this lovely female elk. This painting exhibited in the Leigh Yawkey Woodsen Art Museum’s ‘Wildlife: The Artist’s View’ exhibition.

Original is sold.

My husband and I lived for nine months along the Southern Oregon Coast, and on one of our many trips we saw this magnificent herd of Roosevelt Elk. This painting was inspired by that outing. The dense background foliage is typical of the Oregon Coast.

Rocky Point Meadow Elk

Oil painting of elk in meadow by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Rocky Point Meadow Elk

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 12″h x 16″w, 2008.

Rocky Point, Oregon was an inspiring place to live, especially in the autumn when the aspen changed color in the big meadow beneath Pelican Butte. Though I never witnessed elk in this meadow, I certainly encountered them elsewhere in the area, so I created this painting as I imagined they used to be before white man settled the area.

Original is sold.
