Enchanted Winter Forest

Winter oil landscape painting by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Enchanted Winter Forest

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 32″h x 48″w, 2008 and Revised 2012.

This painting was inspired while Harry and I were back-country skiing on the flanks of Mt. Shasta. It had just snowed the night before, so all the trees were laden with snow which made them look like enchanted sculptures. The setting sun cast a rosy color upon the scene and gave it a warm glow which contrasted beautifully with the blue and purple hues of the shaded areas that were reflecting blue colors from the high mountain sky. Mt. Shasta was so enchanting that day, so I created this oil painting to capture that beauty we had witnessed.

Painted in 2008 and revised 2012.

Original is sold.

Bandon Beach Overlook

Oil landscape painting by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Bandon Beach Overlook

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 24″h x 18″w, 2018.

I wanted to paint my favorite scene in Bandon, so I chose this scenic overlook at the popular Face Rock State Park in Bandon, Oregon. I saw this scene just as the sun was getting ready to set. Bandon Beach, in my opinion, is the most awe-inspiring portion of the west coast because it has beautiful, sculpted sea stacks and monolithic rocks that jut out from the big sandy beaches which make such interesting and striking compositions.

Storm Revelation

Oil painting by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Storm Revelation

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 26″h x 38″w, 2011.

Many winters ago, my husband, Harry, and I were back country skiing in Yellowstone National Park during a blizzard. Yup! We were crazy, but we pushed on in those frigid, windy conditions. It was so stormy we couldn’t see anything but blowing snow. Over the course of several hours, we skied a loop up to a pass then descended down the snow-covered main road. Eventually, the storm began lifting. We had no idea what lay beyond the clouds until that moment, and what a magnificent moment it was. This painting was of that scene. It was beautiful, so I knew I wanted to do a painting to capture the essence of that place at that moment. This painting and scene serve as a perfect metaphor for those ah-ah moments when we see revelation and beauty as the storms in our minds clear.

This painting won Viewer’s Choice Award in the Laumeister Fine Art Competition sponsored by the Bennington Center for the Arts which was juried by Huihan Liu, master signature member of the Oil Painters of America.

Golden Autumn Hills

Oil landscape painting by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Golden Autumn Hills

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 18″h x 24″w, 2011, Revised 2012.

This autumn scene is of the rolling hills east of Ashland, Oregon along Dead Indian Rd. I believe the background hills lead north into Shale City. When I saw this scene, the Oregon White Oak trees were in full autumn splendor. I love the contrast of blue shadows with the golden grasses and the orange oak foliage – a diverse palette of natural colors.

Title revised from Ashland Hills to Golden Autumn Hills.

Yellowstone North

Oil landscape painting north of Yellowstone by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Yellowstone North

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 26″h x 40″w, 2005, Revised 2012.

This scene shows the mountains at the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park. I love the contrast of golden hues against the gray blue hues of the stormy sky and thought it would make a striking painting.
This painting has morphed numerous times. Originally it had elk in it, then I painted out the elk and put in a horse. Later, I added several horses. Eventually it became this landscape.

Wizard Island West View

Oil landscape painting Crater Lake NP by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Wizard Island West View

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 16″h x 20″w. 2011.

On the west rim of Crater Lake in Crater Lake National Park you can see this view of Wizard Island. The deep rich blue color of the lake is so inspiring. This is a rugged landscape with steep cliffs of the caldera offset by the rounder shape of the island. The contrast of the snow compliments the rich blues of the lake, but it also gives contour and definition to the steep caldera cliffs. The shadow on the lake in the lower right-hand corner of the painting gives a hint of the presence of the caldera rim.

The Challenger

Oil painting of elk in landsacpe by Janet Tarjan Erl.

The Challenger

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 26″h x 34″w, 2000.

This grand bull elk wanders the grassy slopes in Yellowstone National Park during late fall. I created a stormy scene to reflect the unpredictable weather of autumn in the mountains of Wyoming and Montana.

Original is sold.

Autumn Vineyard

Oil painting of a vineyard by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Autumn Vineyard

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 9”h x 12”w, 2017.

I was commissioned by the Charles Spinetta Winery in Plymouth, California to do some paintings of their Vineyard. This little oil shows the grape plants in golden and orange shades of color. Some of the plants have dropped all their leaves. I saw this lovely scene just after a storm, so the clouds were still lingering and casting shadows across the vineyard. The rows of grapes nicely curved along the contour of the land and showed the shape of the rolling hills.

Original is sold.

Scouting the Summer Range

Oil painting Cowboys on horseback in the mountains by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Scouting the Summer Range

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 22″h x 32″w, 1994.

The location of this setting is in the Trinity Alps Wilderness near East Boulder Lake, Siskiyou County, California. I painted these three cowboys in this scene because I felt it made an interesting painting. I photographed these cowboys at one my brother-in-law’s brandings on his ranch.

Original is sold.

Season of Gray and Gold

Oil painting of elk by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Season Of Gray and Gold

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 26″h x 40″w, 2000.

Jackson Hole Wildlife Area in Wyoming is packed with herds of elk during the winter. I painted these fine-looking elk that I saw at the refuge and put them in a stormy scene at the north end of Yellowstone National Park. Several years later I decided I didn’t like the elk in the painting, so I painted over them. That painting has changed five times. The only record of the painting is my photos of it.
