Bandon Beach Overlook

Oil landscape painting by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Bandon Beach Overlook

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 24″h x 18″w, 2018.

I wanted to paint my favorite scene in Bandon, so I chose this scenic overlook at the popular Face Rock State Park in Bandon, Oregon. I saw this scene just as the sun was getting ready to set. Bandon Beach, in my opinion, is the most awe-inspiring portion of the west coast because it has beautiful, sculpted sea stacks and monolithic rocks that jut out from the big sandy beaches which make such interesting and striking compositions.

Storm Revelation

Oil painting by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Storm Revelation

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 26″h x 38″w, 2011.

Many winters ago, my husband, Harry, and I were back country skiing in Yellowstone National Park during a blizzard. Yup! We were crazy, but we pushed on in those frigid, windy conditions. It was so stormy we couldn’t see anything but blowing snow. Over the course of several hours, we skied a loop up to a pass then descended down the snow-covered main road. Eventually, the storm began lifting. We had no idea what lay beyond the clouds until that moment, and what a magnificent moment it was. This painting was of that scene. It was beautiful, so I knew I wanted to do a painting to capture the essence of that place at that moment. This painting and scene serve as a perfect metaphor for those ah-ah moments when we see revelation and beauty as the storms in our minds clear.

This painting won Viewer’s Choice Award in the Laumeister Fine Art Competition sponsored by the Bennington Center for the Arts which was juried by Huihan Liu, master signature member of the Oil Painters of America.

Retreat From the Heat

Watercolor painting of a bobcat by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Retreat From the Heat

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 17.5″h x 27″w, 1991.

I depicted this bobcat resting beneath an immense rock in Joshua Tree National Park. I chose to paint this bobcat in this setting because of the unique similarities of the cat and the scene. For instance, the triangular shape of the bobcat mimics the same shape in the rock opening behind the cat. Additionally, the colors and spots of the rocks were strikingly similar to the colors and spots of the bobcat. The combination the two made a great painting.

The Wanderer

Watercolor painting of a coyote in Joshua Tree by Janet Tarjan Erl.

The Wanderer

Medium: Oil, Image Size: 28″h x 20″w, 2000.

Occasionally I see coyotes, so to represent those rare moments, I created this interesting painting of a coyote as it passed an opening in some unique rocks in Joshua Tree National Park, California. The coyote gives a good sense of size of the rocks in both the foreground and the background. Also note how well its colors blend in with its environment.

Seek The Warmth

Watercolor painting of a wolf in woodland setting by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Seek The Warmth

Medium: Watercolor; Image Size: 19 1/2″h x 29″w, 1991.

This timber wolf rests contentedly in rays of sunlight that warm it in the coolness of a forest. The landscape setting was a scene I saw while hiking past Castle Crags Wilderness in Siskiyou County, California. I included a wolf in the painting to add interest to the setting and make the contrast of light and dark, and warmth and coolness have more feeling. The original painting was a watercolor. This was published as a limited-edition print by Applejack.

Beauty and Power

Watercolor painting of a cougar on rocks by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Beauty and Power

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 18″h x 32.5″w, 1991.

This scene was on Little Bogus Creek in North Shasta Valley in Siskiyou County, CA. The powerful cougar is complimented by the enduring power of the rocks. Also, the cougar is well camouflaged by the rocks and the linear shape of its pose fits well with the rock shelf. This is published as a limited edition print.

Throne of the Jaguar

Watercolor painting of a jaguar in the southwest desert by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Throne of the Jaguar

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 20.5″h x 26″w, 1991.

Joshua Tree National Park is a unique desert filled with gigantic, deeply eroded rocks that have weathered into interesting shapes. I am attracted and fascinated with rocks, so I depicted some of those common qualities of Joshua Tree National Park in this painting, and I placed a jaguar upon a throne-like rock to give a sense of size. Though Jaguars no longer roam the park, not too long ago they roamed and hunted those lands.

Distant Gaze

Watercolor painting of a bobcat on rocks by Janet Tarjan Erl.

Distant Gaze

Medium: Watercolor, Image Size: 12 3/4″h x 18″w, 1994.

I am so amazed at how well these cats blend into their surroundings, so I painted this bobcat in a notch between boulders, to show this. This bobcat watches the scenery below from rocky vantage point. The rocks were on Black Mountain, in Siskiyou County, CA.

I painted this cougar in a passive pose of cleaning itself while sunning in a secluded location in Joshua Tree National Monument, CA.
